Whether you remove an existing ceiling to expose the beams, or add the look, revealed wood ceilings add wonderful architectural interest.

This open floor plan home shows that the exposed ceiling doesn’t have to look rustic or industrial. The room has a high exposed ceiling painted a little darker than the walls. Cable runs between the beams.

Tech Lighting Kable Lite

Some of the most incredible contemporary architecture can create real challenges for lighting designers to overcome. Take the amazingly open space here for example – enormous exposed beam construction, beautiful tongue and groove wood decking, plus a 15° sloped ceiling. Scenarios like this make employing traditional lighting sources such as recessed fixtures, ceiling flush mounts, even track or MonoRail nearly impossible without causing major damage or undertaking a major construction project.

Kable Lite, however utilizes a system of tightly suspended low-voltage cables to effectively provide lighting across large, open spans without damaging precious architectural elements and without incurring additional construction costs.

K-Pivot can be used on cables that are from 1″ to 8″ separation. The connection bar that holds the light can be field-cut to any size. The light swivels 220°. The 2″ to 8″ versions pivot on the horizontal axis. The 1″ version pivots on the vertical axis only.

Wood Beams

This room has a smooth, finished ceiling with contrasting warm wood beams. Cove lighting brings out the architecture and adds ambient light.

The space has a very high ceiling. Instead of running the cable horizontally between the beams, this home crosses the beams.

This is in a kitchen with a very high vaulted ceiling.

Design Challenge
Devise a method of providing evening illumination to an expansive kitchen which receives  daytime light from multiple skylights within a steeply vaulted ceiling.

Kable Lite Solution
By it’s very nature, Kable Lite can solve lighting challenges in simpler, easier and more cost effective ways than traditional lighting systems. Here, the designer took advantage of Kable Lite’s slim, floating form factor to quickly resolve the issue at hand. Two cable runs powering low-profile K-Hello heads are suspended at even increments at the opening of the vaulted ceiling to provide uninterrupted general illumination while a third cable run supports five handsome Mini Cargo pendants which provide ample task lighting on the elongated island surface below.

Tech Lighting K-Hello comes in 3.5″ or 5.5″ separations. The light has a 140° head rotation.  The eggcrate louver keeps the bright 75 watt MR16 from overpowering you while still providing a lot of light.

Design Challenge
Retrofit this mid-century modern living space’s vaulted ceiling with a solution to provide general illumination while echoing the linear nature of the wooden beams.

Kable Lite Solution
To mimic the linear nature of the architectural wooden beams while preserving their historic nature, three parallel Kable Lite systems were recessed between the beams as not to obstruct the open flow of the vaulted space. To keep the style and spacial impact to a minimum, ultra-sleek K-Hello heads were installed to provide highly-functional general illumination throughout the various areas of this special room.

Painted Wood Ceiling

I absolutely love this beach house. The exposed wood ceiling is painted white and Tech Lighting Cable runs from wall to wall.

The cable is attached to the wall with Soft Turnbuckles.

K-Hello lights are very bright, but the eggcrate louver keeps them from bright lighting you. They are also dimmable, so you can completely control the light level.

Exposed Wood Ceiling

This kitchen has a beautifully finished wood ceiling. A series of pendants are suspended from cable to run over the long island bar. An adjustable standoff helps to support the long run of pendants.

An additional cable run has two K-Hello lights over the counter. At 75 watts each, they provide plenty of light.

Design Challenge
Suspend decorative pendant lighting above an elongated kitchen island without disrupting the open, airy feeling of a mid-century modern home.

Kable Lite Solution
When working on the lighting design for this beautiful mid-century modern renovation, it was imperative to maintain the integrity of the two major design elements within the space: the open, gently vaulted ceiling & the beautiful hardwood ceiling. Kable Lite is the perfect solution to both areas of concern. First, its ultra-slim wire profile is nearly invisible as it floats above the kitchen; second, even with this expansive run and five relatively heavy glass pendants suspended, only a single tiny hole was drilled into the ceiling to support the system at its center. To complete the look, retro-inspired Pelé pendants were selected to complete the look.
