Art Nouveau Lighting

Art Nouveau lighting incorporates elements from nature. This style has organic lines and motifs like leaves, vines, flowers, birds, insects and sea creatures. Colors are muted and natural materials such as wood and mica are emphasized. Deep gem toned greens and reds are used with shades of brown.

Art Nouveau means “new art.” Mass production was making furniture more affordable, but at the cost of creativity and individuality. A lot of what was newly available was shoddy. Art Nouveau style brought back good craftsmanship and quality materials. It developed from the Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic movements.

Both Art Deco and Art Nouveau may have geometric shapes, but Art Nouveau Lighting will have a more curving form.

Art Deco Lighting

Art Deco is geometric and angular. This style has straight, square lines and geometric motifs like circles and zig zags.

Art Deco surged in popularity after the 1925 Design Expostion, Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, in Paris. The look was called Style Moderne. Where Art Nouveau embraced hand crafted items, Art Deco celebrated industrial materials and technology. Black is popular and colors are often bold. Modern materials like chrome, aluminum, stainless steel, mirror and Bakelite are embraced and featured.

When the look became popular again in the 1960s, it was called Art Deco.
