Blue & White Asian Garden China from the Bombay Company

Asian Garden china was produced in the 1990s. It combines Chinoiserie motifs in cobalt blue transfer-printed on white porcelain, often with platinum or gold trim and a glossy clear glaze. Pieces were made in China and are highly collectible. They are usually more substantial, less fragile than some other china.

They are marked “Bombay” on the bottom. This was the mark of the Bombay Company.

The Bombay Company started as a catalog company in the late 1970s, then opened stores, at one time over 500. I remember seeing them in malls around the 1980s. The stores closed in 2008. Since then, some things have been on QVC and in Value City Furniture. Now there is a website; bombaycompany.com. But it doesn’t look much like the stores did.

The most distinctive pieces may be the slightly oversized footed cups paired with square saucers.

Asian Garden pattern has been discontinued for decades, but is found on eBay, Marketplace, Poshmark, Etsy and Replacements.com.

All of these pieces have at one time or another been available.
